Families Magazine started in London in 1990 and celebrates its 30th birthday next year! The magazine is a leader in its field and has the benefit of a long history of brand building.
There are now 40 magazine editions across the country and Merseyside magazine could be the 41st!

What does a Families® Magazine franchisee do?
Sell advertising to local businesses
Create a vital, interesting local publication which will engage readers
Undertake all aspects of publishing the magazine such as selection of articles and imagery, editing, working with a designer on lay out, proofing and uploading the magazine to print
Distribute copies of the magazine via a network of distributors to places such as schools, libraries and pre-schools/nurseries

What does a typical day involve?
Families® magazine is published 6 times a year so works on a 2 month production cycle.
During the first month, a typical day will include telephone work and email correspondence with advertising clients, and sometimes face to face meetings, to secure bookings.
During the second month, franchisees compile details of local events and activities of interest to pre-school and primary age children, produce and edit articles, select images and work with their designer.
Franchisees are offered, free of charge, a wide range of quality articles on subjects of interest to parents. They don’t have to use these, but can if they wish.
The second month also involves managing distribution.
An average franchisee works 25 to 30 hours per week but much can be done outside of office hours.
How can I fit this in with my family commitments?
Running a magazine is not a part time role, but it is a flexible one. Most franchisees are parents who want to manage the care of their family whilst earning some money alongside.
Franchisees tend to organise their work schedule so they can take time off with their children during school holidays.
What qualifications, experience and personal qualities do I need?
Sales experience or a natural disposition for sales and a willingness to embrace it. (A comprehensive media sales training package is provided.)

How much training is provided?
Families®Magazine provides 9.5 days of training in sales, publishing, distribution strategy, all IT systems, website, and social media. Ongoing training opportunities are also available.
How many magazines do franchisees publish annually?
Families® Magazine is a bi-monthly magazine so there are 6 issues per year. Each issue has minimum 16 pages and a minimum of 16,000 copies per issue are published.
A large number of existing Families® franchisees publish magazines with many more pages and a much higher print run, delivering increased profitability over time.
Are there opportunities for Families® franchisees to network?
There is an annual conference in September, as well as other opportunities to meet and communicate with other franchisees at other times of the year.
Will I be able to purchase additional territories?
Yes, and at a small percentage of the cost of the initial one! We have significant numbers of franchisees in the network who publish second, and even third magazines.

What is it like to be a Families® Magazine Franchisee and Editor?
Jayne Keep owns and runs two magazines, Families® Manchester and Families® Cheshire, with her partner, Caryl Hall.
Jayne Keep from Macclesfield, Cheshire currently runs Families® Cheshire and Families® Manchester Magazines with co-editor, Caryl Hall.
"We took on the Cheshire franchise of Families® in 2009, I had taken redundancy from a full time role whilst pregnant with my second child and knew I didn’t want to return to working 9-5 and having to juggle family life with work commitments. My passion for reading and writing instantly drew me and my friend, Caryl, to the business. We launched the Cheshire edition in March 2009. We’ve never looked back. In fact, we loved it so much that 18 months later we bought a further franchise, Families® Manchester.
Running the magazines over the last 10 years has been amazing for me and for my family. I have the flexibility to be there through school holidays or when one of the children is ill. I even get to include my children in my work as we review local shows, classes, parties and activities. My 9 year old son Logan says he never wants me to stop running a magazine!
The work is challenging, which also makes it rewarding. You do have to use your brain and be a business woman. I enjoy speaking to local businesses about how I can help them promote their events or services, and negotiating deals knowing the more I put into the pages of the magazine the more money I can draw out for me and my family. There are so many aspects to the role: writing, editing, proof reading, assisting with design and print, selling the ad space, working through invoices and accounts. It is definitely a varied role that gives you a huge skill base to take forward into other roles in the future."
